CARTERVILLE - For those who don't know how to send a fill or kill in anticipation of a dead cat bounce - has John A. Logan College got a class for you.
Students in David England's classes not only learn how to talk the stock market talk, but also how to turn that talk into a walk toward financial independence.
The popular classes feature a Learn to Earn portfolio challenge, where students are supplied with 50,000 paper dollars and turned loose to make a killing, or in some cases, lose their shirts, in the stock market.
Students are graded not on the size of their return but rather their application of the trading process as taught by England.
"Someone could lose a lot of money, but learn just as much," England said. The learning begins just as soon as England welcomes his students to class on day one. "We start with 'This is a stock.' That way if someone has zero experience, they aren't intimidated because that's what the stock market is designed to do - intimidate," he said. "People think they have to go through full-service brokers or other professionals and they don't. I want people to know that they can figure out the stock market."
They include people like Daniel Crain, a Herrin resident who was in England's class last semester. The 47-year-old said he took England's class to "put the ball in my court. I want to have the option to retire at 50 and I want to be able to depend on myself and my investments to so."
Judging from the 30 percent-plus return Crain got on his (paper) investment in England's class, an early retirement may just be in store for the longtime Herrin Wal-Mart employee.
Crain made his "fortune" by day trading, that is buying stocks in the morning and getting out in the afternoon - a method of playing the market that England doesn't really recommend.
"The probability of losing is too high," he said. "It can be extremely dangerous and the risk is too great. I tend to steer my students away from day trading. I want them to think like traders and not investors."
Getting students to think like traders involves education about stock market strategies and how to avoid losses. "For instance, I want them to stay away from individual companies and go with groups like exchange traded funds or mutual funds. That way if one company's stock goes down, you don't get your head handed to you on a platter," England said. "I also don't like trading on stock tips. That's one of the most dangerous things people can do with their money."
England also advises students to practice trading for two years before actually taking the plunge with real money. "You have to learn what works and what doesn't and in the meantime, you can build your portfolio balance and work on your strategies," he said.
Above all, England tries to teach his students to avoid greedy impulses. "I know this will sound funny coming from the mouth of a 'greedy capitalist,' but you will not become successful until you learn how to give and share. After that is when the riches come in. If you keep all your money to yourself, greed will eat you alive," he said.
Crain said he took England's lessons to heart. "David taught me about discipline and letting the trades come to me. I study the market and don't jump on any bandwagon. I'm picking my stocks on my own terms and not depending on anyone else's judgment. I set a goal for a stock and once I reached it, I got out. With the stock market, you have to be patient and don't get greedy," he said.
Crain recommends England's class to anyone interested in working toward financial independence. "You may be able to trade on your own but you may lose a lot of money while doing it," he said.
In addition to his classes, England, who is not connected to any stock or brokerage firm, offers free seminars to the public each semester at the college.
